Laptop Guide
Translating Complex Instructions into a Confidence-Building Resource
I designed a step-by-step visual guide to help older adults with limited technical experience use loaned devices independently, translating dense manufacturer documentation into an approachable, low-anxiety learning resource.
Challenge
Existing manufacturer documentation assumed prior technical knowledge, creating confusion and anxiety rather than confidence. Users couldn't operate devices without in-person staff support, limiting the program's reach to people who could physically access help.
Solution
A visual, step-by-step guide built to reduce cognitive load at every decision: clear typographic hierarchy for scanning, intuitive iconography to reinforce actions without relying on text, and generous spacing and calm visual tone to reframe procedural content as an approachable learning experience rather than a technical document. The goal was a resource users could trust and follow alone.
Results
Users could operate loaned devices without in-person staff support
No revision requests from program librarians following distribution, indicating the guide performed as intended in real use
Designed for an audience with low technical confidence
